# 38 Hualien and Taroko Gorge

Halloh. Long time no write. I am four stops behind. I can't believe as modern as Taiwan is how few internet shops there are here. Oh well. My next stop was Hualien. The nearest large city to the Taroko Gorge. The Liwu river has been carving through these mountains since the beginning of time. At some points the gorge is one kilometer deep. Aborigional people have always lived in the mountains. The Japanese occupied Taiwan in 1895. They pushed into this valley in 1914 looking for minerals and lumber. The Atayal people resisted and were brutally suppressed. The old Hohuan trail was widened and the area became a popular spot for Japanese tourists in the 1930's. The KMT extended the road further in the 1950's at a cost of over 400 lives. It was very impressive.
