Series # 57? Saigon
Halloh. I flew in HCMC and got a cab to the Pham Ngu Lao area. The Lonely Planet calls it the backpackers ghetto. Thats a little harsh. There are a 'about a hunnerd' hotels and dorm places to stay. A lady approached me offering her guesthouse. I followed her down a narrow alley crowded with Viet housing. I guess it could seem frightening, walking past open doors with people cooking, watching TV and just living their lives. I felt a little like a voyeur (sp). Coming back from my first walkabout, I took a wrong turn and got lost. I had her business card and showed it to another guesthouse madame. She brought me home and the ladies had a good laugh.
Pham Hgu Lao also has tons of fine cafes, bars and shops. There is a Bobby Brewers coffee shop. I saw three pirated first run movies there. Its a nice break from the heat and chaos of the neighborhood.
