Halloh. Of late, my love affair for the Thai train system has become somewhat strained. We stopped at the small town of Sala Ya. Thailands entire rail system works off a single line. From time to time, one train has to wait on a siding so another may pass from the opposite direction. We waited a long time. I asked the dining car steward about the delay. He said there had been an accident up ahead. Soon, however, the super luxurious Eastern Orient Express came streaking by. Soon another train passed from the same direction. He liared us. I walked the platform to the station building. The fellow there said the locomotive was broken and a replacement was on the way. This was a long train. Fourteen passenger, one dining and one baggage car. There were perhaps 700 people on board. We were there 3 hours. Thai folks can't be bothered using the trash bags provided in each car. This was an ordinary train. That meant no aircon. The passengers simply threw their fruit rinds and wrappers out the window. By the time we left, the platform was a mess. The toilets drop waste directly on the roadbed. So, below each toilet was a pile of poo and paper.
My seat mate was pleasant German named Clark. During our delay he spent his time smoking on the platform and looking for other Germans. I taught a three year old girl to stick her tongue on command. After we mastered that, I tried to talk Thai ladies into climbing on the stations freight scale for weigh ins. I only convinced two ladies.
The replacement engine arrived. It was a good thing there were two sidings. Another train wanted by so we had to wait for the switch over. Finally we were on the way. More later, Bye for now.
